HOME SAFETY PROGRAM
SMOKE DETECTORS
- Have a smoke detector on every level of your home in main hallways at the top of each stairway
- Have a smoke detector in every bedroom
- Test smoke detectors monthly
- NEVER disable or remove batteries
CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
- Have a working carbon monoxide detector on every level of your home
- Test smoke detectors monthly
- NEVER disable or remove batteries
- For sleeping quarters, install the Carbon Monoxide detector within 10 Feet from every sleeping quarters
ESCAPE PLANNING
- Develop a fire evacuation plan with your family members and practice it often
- Know two ways out of every room in your home
- Make sure windows and doors operate properly
- In the event of a fire, feel closed doors before opening, if hot, use another exit
- Identify a meeting place outside the home
- Remember the golden rule “Get Out and Stay Out.” – NEVER re-enter a burning building
THE EASIEST FIRE TO PUT OUT IS THE ONE YOU PREVENT
- Have your furnace and chimney inspected annually
- Have your fireplace chimney inspected and cleaned annually
- Keep combustibles at least 3 feet from any heat source (fireplaces, hot water heater, space heaters, furnace)
- Keep candles away from window treatments
- Extinguish all candles before leaving home or going to bed
- Don’t leave any food cooking in or on the stove un-attended
- Never overload electrical outlets
- Check that all smoking materials are extinguished
- Never allow anyone to smoke in bed
